RAR is an archive format. Modern Windows versions may support more archive formats natively, but Windows 10 generally requires a reputable archive utility to open/extract RAR files.
Steps
- Download a maintained archive utility such as 7-Zip or WinRAR from its official publisher.
- Install it, then right-click the RAR file and choose the utility’s Open or Extract option.
- Choose a destination folder and extract the contents rather than running unknown files directly from the archive.
- Scan/inspect extracted files before opening executables or scripts.
- If the archive is multipart, keep all `.part1.rar`, `.part2.rar`, etc. files together and start extraction from the first part.

7-Zip can extract many RAR archives, while WinRAR is the format’s original commercial utility and may support the newest RAR features sooner. Download either only from its official site. After extraction, the `.rar` can be retained as an archive or deleted only after you verify the extracted files.

Do not confuse RAR extraction with converting the archive. You normally extract the files and use them in their original formats. If Windows says the archive is damaged, re-download it from a trusted source or verify all multipart pieces; repeatedly trying different extractors cannot restore missing archive data.
