Unexpected line spacing in Word usually comes from paragraph spacing, line-spacing settings, or the applied style. Fix the formatting at the paragraph/style level instead of pressing Enter or adding manual blank lines.
Show formatting marks first
On the Home tab, turn on Show/Hide ¶. This reveals paragraph marks and helps you see whether extra blank paragraphs are creating the apparent spacing.
Set line and paragraph spacing
Select the affected paragraphs. Open Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing and choose the required line spacing. Use the paragraph dialog for exact Before, After, and line-spacing values.
Check the paragraph style
If spacing returns when you create a new paragraph, inspect the applied style such as Normal, Body Text, or a heading. Modify the style when the document should use the same spacing consistently.
Clear direct formatting carefully
When pasted text carries unwanted formatting, use Clear All Formatting or paste as text, then reapply the correct style. Do not clear formatting on content where bold, italics, links, or other intentional formatting must be preserved.
For academic or business requirements, follow the specified line spacing and paragraph spacing separately. “Double-spaced” text can still look too wide if extra space is also added after every paragraph.
Use the ruler for indentation, not spacing
First-line and hanging indents can make paragraphs look oddly separated even when line spacing is correct. Check paragraph indentation separately so you do not compensate for an indent problem by changing vertical spacing.
