McAfee pop-ups can come from the installed McAfee app, browser notifications, or scam web pages pretending to be McAfee. Identify the source before disabling anything.
Steps
- If the alert is from the legitimate McAfee app, open McAfee settings and reduce optional informational/marketing notifications where the current product permits it.
- If it appears in a browser, check the browser’s Site notifications permissions and remove/block suspicious sites that were allowed to send notifications.
- If you no longer want McAfee, uninstall it through Settings > Apps using the normal vendor process, then confirm Windows Security/Microsoft Defender becomes active.
- Run a reputable malware/security scan if pop-ups persist after the legitimate app/browser permission is removed.
- Do not click phone numbers, renewal buttons, or ‘virus found’ prompts on unexpected web pop-ups.

A real antivirus notification and a browser push notification can look similar. Removing McAfee should not leave the PC without active antivirus protection.

Windows 10 is unsupported. Scam ‘McAfee’ alerts are common; verify subscriptions only through the official McAfee account/app, not a pop-up link.
