McAfee security software can normally be removed from Windows 11 through Installed apps. After removal, confirm that Microsoft Defender Antivirus or another trusted security product is active so the PC is not left without real-time protection.
Steps
- Save open work and close McAfee windows.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the McAfee product you intend to remove.
- Open its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow McAfee’s removal prompts and remove only the components you no longer want.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and confirm an antivirus provider is active.
If ordinary uninstall fails
Use McAfee’s current official support or removal procedure rather than deleting program folders, services, or registry entries manually. Security suites can contain several interconnected components.
Know which McAfee products are installed
WebAdvisor, antivirus, VPN, password-management, and other McAfee components can appear separately. Removing one does not necessarily remove all of them.
Defender normally resumes automatically
Microsoft Defender Antivirus generally becomes active when a compatible third-party antivirus is no longer registered, but verify its status instead of assuming the transition succeeded.
Managed computers need administrator approval
If McAfee was installed by an employer, school, or managed-service provider, the security configuration may be centrally enforced. Contact the administrator before removing protection.
Check browser components separately
If McAfee browser extensions or WebAdvisor remain after the main security suite is removed, review them separately in Installed apps and the browser’s extension page. Do not delete browser profile data just to remove an extension.
