A bootable Windows 11 USB lets you start a compatible PC and run Windows Setup. Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool is the simplest option for most people because it downloads the current installation files and prepares the USB automatically.
Create a bootable Windows 11 USB
- Back up anything you need from the USB drive because its existing contents can be erased.
- Download Microsoft’s current Windows 11 Media Creation Tool.
- Connect the USB drive to the computer.
- Run the tool and choose Create installation media.
- Confirm the requested language and edition when prompted.
- Select USB flash drive.
- Choose the correct USB device and let the tool finish creating the media.
Check the drive carefully before proceeding
If several removable drives are connected, disconnect unnecessary ones or verify the target by capacity and drive information. Selecting the wrong drive during media creation can erase files you intended to keep.
You can also write an official ISO
Advanced users may download an official Windows 11 ISO and write it to USB with a reputable utility such as Rufus. Settings such as partition scheme and firmware compatibility matter, so Microsoft’s standard media tool is preferable when you do not need custom installation media.
Booting the USB is a separate step
Creating the installer does not automatically start Windows Setup. To use it, boot the target computer from the USB through its boot menu or firmware settings. During installation, distinguish the USB installer from the computer’s internal disks before deleting or formatting any partitions.
Keep the finished USB unchanged until you have successfully booted the intended PC. If you plan a clean installation, back up the target computer and make sure any required encryption recovery keys and licensing information are available first.
