Windows 10 provides several ways to identify the graphics processor in your PC. Task Manager is the quickest for most users, while Device Manager and DirectX Diagnostic Tool can provide additional device and driver information.
Find the GPU in Task Manager
- Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager.
- If necessary, select More details.
- Open the Performance tab.
- Select GPU 0, GPU 1, or another GPU entry in the left pane.
- Read the graphics processor name shown in the panel.
- Note dedicated and shared GPU memory if those details matter for the application you are checking.
Device Manager shows installed adapters
Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. A laptop can list both integrated graphics and a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU. Seeing two adapters is normal on many systems.
Use DxDiag for additional information
Press Windows+R, type dxdiag, and open the Display or Render tabs. DxDiag can show the device name, manufacturer, approximate display memory, driver model, and driver information useful for troubleshooting.
Do not rely on the GPU name alone for upgrades
Desktop graphics-card compatibility also depends on power-supply capacity and connectors, case clearance, motherboard slot availability, and firmware. Laptop GPUs are usually not replaceable as ordinary add-in cards.
Update drivers from trusted sources
For driver problems, use Windows Update, the PC manufacturer, or the GPU vendor’s official software. Avoid generic driver-download websites.
Windows 10 standard support ended October 14, 2025. If you are checking graphics compatibility for a major upgrade, also verify that the overall PC can run a supported OS.
If Task Manager does not display GPU performance data, check the graphics driver and Windows build before assuming the GPU is missing. Very old drivers or hardware can expose less monitoring information.
For gaming requirements, compare the exact GPU model and video memory with the game’s current minimum and recommended specifications.
Check which GPU an application is actually using
A laptop can contain both integrated graphics and a discrete GPU. Finding both adapter names does not prove that a game or creative application is using the faster one. Task Manager can show GPU engine activity, and Windows graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s control software can help verify the application’s assigned processor.
Use the right identification tool
Task Manager is convenient for model and live utilization, Device Manager confirms installed adapters, and DxDiag provides graphics and driver details useful for troubleshooting. For upgrade compatibility, also verify the computer model, power supply, physical space, and motherboard support rather than relying on the GPU name alone.
