Windows 10 Pro and some other editions can encrypt compatible removable drives with BitLocker To Go. Encryption protects the drive if it is lost, but losing every unlock method can make the data inaccessible.
Steps
- Back up important files from the external drive before changing its encryption state.
- Connect the drive and open File Explorer.
- Right-click the external drive and choose Turn on BitLocker when your Windows edition provides that option.
- Choose an unlock method and create a strong password when appropriate.
- Save the recovery key somewhere separate from the encrypted drive.
- Choose the encryption options appropriate to the drive and start encryption.
- Allow the process to finish before disconnecting the drive.
Protect the recovery key separately
Do not store the only recovery key as a file on the same encrypted drive. Keep an independent copy in an authorized Microsoft account, password manager, printed record, or organization-managed recovery system.
Encryption can take time
The process can run for a while on a large or slow external drive. Keep the PC powered and the drive connected until Windows reports that encryption is complete.
Compatibility matters
Older Windows editions and non-Windows devices may not be able to unlock a BitLocker To Go drive normally. Confirm where the drive must be used before encrypting it.
Windows 10 is unsupported
Windows 10 reached the end of standard support in October 2025. For ongoing security-sensitive storage, manage encrypted drives from a supported operating system whenever possible.
