Mouse DPI controls how far the pointer moves relative to physical mouse movement, but Windows 11 does not provide a universal DPI control for every mouse. Windows offers pointer-speed settings; true hardware DPI is usually changed with buttons on the mouse or the manufacturer’s software.
Adjust pointer speed in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Mouse.
- Move the Mouse pointer speed slider.
- Test the pointer and make smaller adjustments until it feels comfortable.
Change the mouse’s actual DPI
Gaming and productivity mice often include a DPI button that cycles through preset sensitivity levels. More advanced models use software from Logitech, Razer, Corsair, SteelSeries, Microsoft, or another manufacturer to set exact DPI stages. Download that software only from the device maker’s official site or trusted app store.
Pointer speed and DPI are not the same thing
DPI is a sensor setting on the mouse. Windows pointer speed applies software scaling after the mouse reports movement. For general desktop work, adjusting the Windows slider may be all you need. For games, drawing, or workflows that depend on repeatable physical movement, setting a known hardware DPI is usually more useful.
The classic Mouse Properties dialog also includes Enhance pointer precision, which adds acceleration. Some gamers disable it for more consistent movement, while many everyday users prefer the accelerated feel. There is no universally best setting.
If the pointer suddenly feels wrong, also check whether a DPI button was pressed accidentally, whether the correct mouse profile is active, and whether the sensor surface is clean before reinstalling drivers.
