How to Stop the Twitter App from Using Cellular Data on Your iPhone 7

Some of the apps on your iPhone will use more data than others, especially if you use that app a lot. One such app is Twitter. It’s constantly connecting to Twitter’s servers to find new tweets, many of which contain pictures, videos, or links to websites. Unfortunately this can result in a lot of data usage from the Twitter app.

If you are going over your monthly data allotment, then you may have targeted Twitter as a culprit. Fortunately it is possible to stop the Twitter app from using cellular data on your iPhone by following the steps in the guide below.

How to Block Cellular Data Usage on the iPhone 7 by the Twitter App

The steps in this article were performed on an iPhone 7 Plus, in iOS 10.3.1. once you complete these steps, the Twitter app will only be able to connect to the Internet and download data when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. Note that you will also be unable to send any tweets after enabling this setting.

Step 1: Open the Settings app.

open the iphone settings menu

Step 2: Select the Cellular option.

open the iphone cellular menu

Step 3: Scroll down and tap the button to the right of Twitter to turn it off. There will be no green shading around the Twitter button when you have disabled cellular data usage. I have disabled cellular data usage by Twitter in the image below.

Note that following these steps is a good idea if you are doing this for your own phone, but you might need to go a step further if you are making this change for someone else, like a child. Disabling app cellular data usage like this can easily be undone by following these steps again and turning the setting back on. Therefore you might want to use something called Restrictions to prevent this setting from being changed. You can find the cellular data usage option on the Restrictions menu and turn it on by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Open the General menu.
  3. Select the Restrictions option.
  4. Tap the Enable Restrictions button.
  5. Create a Restrictions passcode.
  6. Confirm the passcode.
  7. Scroll down and select the Cellular Data Use option.
  8. Select the Don’t Allow Changes option.
